Briefing to the 8782nd session of the Security Council, May 27, 2021

The events of the last few weeks have provoked worldwide recognition of realities on the ground in Occupied Palestine, realities of systemic discrimination, of oppression, and of settler colonialism. People have responded to the images that emerged from different parts of Palestine and were diffused by social media. Mass awareness of the crimes committed by Israeli soldiers and settlers has translated into calls for action.

We are at a new juncture regarding the Question of Palestine. The impunity that the Israeli government has long enjoyed is coming to an end. Institutions like the United Nations Security Council have a duty to ensure that Israel, a nuclear-armed regional superpower, is not placed on the same footing as the Palestinian people who have never been allowed to enjoy self-determination.

Dr. Rashid Khalidi was asked to brief the United Nations Security Council on May 27, 2021, on the steps necessary to implement UN resolutions and provide peace and security for all in Palestine. The text of his remarks follows. —Institute for Palestinian Studies
